The position of Medical Instrument Technician is located in the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Lab under the direction of Nursing Perioperative Service at the James A Haley VAH. The Cardiac Catheterization Technicians has the skills necessary for assisting in all complex invasive cardiovascular procedures including basic electrophysiology and invasive diagnostic tests, of the pulmonary system (lung) and the cardiovascular system (heart and circulation). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Licensure or Certification. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a of VA Handbook 5005, Part II. Preferred Experience: Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Grade Determinations: At least 1 year of specialized experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-08), which is directly related to the duties of this position being filled and includes specialized experience as a Cardiac catheterization technician which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to provide all aspects of Cardiac catheterization technicians services including specialized duties. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs: 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. 2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. ["Duties Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs vascular ultrasound examinations, including routine and emergency procedures, such as carotid ultrasounds and peripheral vascular studies. Operates and maintains Doppler machines, photoplethsmography, ultrasound machines and other monitoring devices that are available for these procedures Makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments to the operation of equipment to ensure accurate results. Independently performs clerical procedures for the purpose of maintain accurate ultrasound records such as patient schedule log, diagnostic log, and procedure log. Gives preliminary interpretations to the vascular surgeon, or the referring physician of any significate abnormalities that would require immediate attention. Assist the surgeon in the operating room with the ultrasound machine when needed. Assists with laboratory accreditation. Writing new procedures and policies if needed. Quality assurance every 4 months. Records of any reports reviewed. Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to the supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section. Gather related information so that correlation of the examinations to other studies can be reviewed by the vascular surgeon. Devise and maintain a protocol and procedure manual regarding the function of the Vascular Laboratory and make revisions and additions when necessary. Prepare patient education material pertinent to vascular disease. Communicates effectively with colleagues, students hospital staff, and others. Performs other duties as assigned."]
