The incumbent will be assigned as a Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) and will be under the Sleep Section of the Neurology Service. Will serve as a senior Sleep Technician and/or Lead and will assist in overseeing the day to day operations of the sleep lab and DME program. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). This is a lead MIT position. Preferred Experience: Four to five years of current polysomnography experience as daytime sleep tech. Registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Grade Determinations: GS-09 At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level GS-8, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide all aspects of polysomnography services. Performing clinical duties including home sleep testing procedures, DME and PAP setup clinics, patient virtual and in-person appointments and scoring of home and attended PSG sleep studies. S/he will be able to train staff at other facilities within the Health Care System, including technicians, residents, physicians, research personnel and staff at other institutions covered by the sharing agreement. S/he will provide patient education for various clinic issues and assist in research projects under the guidance of the Medical Directors. S/he will maintain and annually update the Lab's Policy and Procedure Manual and as new technology, standards, and procedures are instituted in the field of Sleep Medicine. S/he will maintain standardized laboratory regulatory requirements according to the AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) and CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) criteria. S/he will monitor, maintain, order all equipment and supplies to keep the sleep and neurodiagnostics labs functioning including medical equipment, furniture and computers. S/he will forecast resources, equipment needs, evaluate new products and make recommendations to supervisor and medical directors for improvement in operations. S/he will maintain and update reports on laboratory and DME statistics, workload reports, and work directly with the Medical Directors in developing long-range plans for the sleep and neurodiagnostics programs. S/he will maintain a collegial and professional atmosphere at all times with physicians, staff, students, nursing, administration, and patients. High level of understanding of high and low filters, sensitivities, gain, AC/DC filters and inputs, bio-calibrations, machine calibrations, and instrumentation and electrical safety. Manually scoring of sleep studies. Score sleep/wake stages and scoring clinical events by site accepted guidelines.
