The function of the Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) assigned to VAMC Orlando is to perform logistical and technical support to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists assigned to the facility. They maintain anesthesiology supplies and equipment, set-up anesthetizing locations and operate, monitor, and collect data from anesthesia related equipment. Also performs equipment preventive maintenance/repair. Incumbent's prior experience working in an Anesthesia Department and/or Intensive Care Units as a Medical Instrument Technician is HIGHLY PREFERRED. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/02/2023. Basic Requirements: a. Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. In many situations, the duration of activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. ["The anesthesia technician at this level assists anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in difficult anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision. The incumbent will connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment (e.g., arterial pressure monitors), anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, and ultrasonic scanning devices. Technicians at this level will prepare medications as directed by the attending physician, and will mentor and train lower graded technicians, on technology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. The technician will exercise a high degree of independent judgment in anesthesia technology duties. The incumbent will be responsible for : Equipment: Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all equipment assigned to the anesthesia service. Perform routine user maintenance of anesthesia equipment as prescribed by the manufacturer and service policy. Inspect all anesthesia equipment at regular intervals to ensure continued safe operation. Report unsafe equipment or conditions to the anesthesia staff and take corrective action as indicated . Contact Bio-medical Engineering Service for repairs when indicated. Cleans and calibrates all anesthesia equipment as prescribed by the manufacturer and/or service policy. Incumbent will be able to set up or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as applicable and be certified annually on the specific equipment for which they are responsible. Supplies: Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all supplies used by the Anesthesia Service. Maintain a clean and organized storage area for all supplies and equipment. Order supplies as needed to maintain an acceptable inventory. Distribute supplies to areas of use as needed and as prescribed in service policy. Medications: Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all medications used by the Anesthesia Service. Order medications form Pharmacy at regular intervals to maintain inventory at acceptable levels. Check inventory each month for outdated medication and return to Pharmacy for replacement. Maintain an inventory of nitrous oxide, air, and oxygen compressed gas cylinders. Clinical Duties (includes but not limited to) : Set up and calibrate both invasive and non-invasive pressure monitoring equipment. Set up and assist anesthesia staff performing sterile procedures such as arterial lines, central venous lines, and pulmonary artery catheters. Remove used equipment and supplies at the end of each case and replace with clean equipment and supplies; discard any trash left by the anesthesia providers. Responsible for ordering and receiving oxygen tanks weekly, taking inventory and making sure there is enough of oxygen daily. Set up pressure bags for arterial lines. Set up IV blood tubing making sure everything is flushed Assist with arterial lines, Swan Granz, two lumkens, etc. Assist with epidural and blocks for Pain Clinic. Stock OR rooms and the carts in the Recovery Room daily and anesthesia carts when needed. Obtain required equipment (e.g., oxygen, IV pumps) from SICU when needed. Assist with set-up of the ultrasound machine and assist provider as required. Complete daily inventory of medications used by anesthesia staff and replenish as required, maintaining an up-to-date list of anesthesia medication inventory. Prepare all anesthesia blades, bronchoscopes, LMA airways for sterilization; wash and performing leak testing as required.
