Position Highlights
With strong support from the State of Arizona, the College of Engineering, College of Medicine, and the University of Arizona Cancer Center have partnered to create a program in Cancer Bioengineering. To achieve that goal, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the College of Medicine, in collaboration with the University of Arizona Cancer Center and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, invite applications for four tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with an anticipated start date of January 2024. We are specifically interested in the areas of (1) cellular and biomolecular engineering; (2) tissue bioengineering; (3) studying the effects of tumor microenvironment, including cancer mechanobiology; and (5) imaging and computational approaches to cancer modelling. We seek candidates with an entrepreneurial spirit who aim to discover novel inventions that lead to the development of new companies or industry partnerships. We will provide generous startup packages commensurate with experience.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center at the forefront for expanded, high impact precision cancer medicine. UACC has strengths in basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis, tumor microenvironment, disparities, and cancer prevention. UACC is supported by a broad array of research activities including Data Science, Human Immune Monitoring, Cancer Imaging, Genomics, and Metabolomics, and a comprehensive biorepository which provides biospecimen collection, processing, and storage coupled with clinical and risk factor data collection for a variety of cancers.

Established in 2009, the Department of Biomedical Engineering is the newest engineering department in the College of Engineering and is uniquely positioned within the University to carry out interdisciplinary research at the intersection of medicine, science, and engineering. The Department of Biomedical Engineering is closely aligned and geographically adjacent to the University of Arizona College of Medicine and the Banner University Medical Center.
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is a fast-growing, highly interdisciplinary unit whose faculty make pivotal contributions to UA’s mission of multidisciplinary and collaborative discovery through cross-cutting basic and applied/translational research. The mission of CMM is to provide pre- and post-doctoral, medical, and graduate education in an interdisciplinary environment through research activities, to advance knowledge of biological structure as related to function and disease from the molecular level to the whole organism. Our faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary research and translational centers such as the Arizona Cancer Center, Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center, Sarver Heart Center, and BIO5. CMM is currently ranked #5 in the 2022 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings.
Tech Launch Arizona partners faculty with the technology and business communities to turn discoveries into real world solutions. TLA maximizes the impact of UArizona research, intellectual property (IP), and technological innovation. During the past decade, TLA and its related activities generated an economic output of $1.6B. Services provided by TLA include disclosing and patenting intellectual property, IP enhancement grants, licensing, and support entrepreneurial inventors through all phases leading to the launch of a startup.

Duties & Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to establish a strong research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to mentoring students, including those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. They will also be expected to participate in outreach, partner with colleagues across departments and colleges, and nurture an environment of collaboration. Additionally, faculty members help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
Successful Assistant Professor applicants will have a strong potential for establishing an independent research program and extramural funding. Associate Professor applicants should have an established track record of laboratory research, publication, and grant funding. All candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse student body at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Minimum Qualifications
For College of Engineering
PhD in Engineering or closely related field (at time of hire). Candidates must provide education credentials during offer discussions.
Four years of experience beyond the PhD is required for appointment at the Associate Rank. No additional experience beyond the PhD is required for appointment at the Assistant Rank.
For College of Medicine:
Doctorate in Molecular/Cellular Biology, Cancer Biology/Oncology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Immunology, Medicine, or Chemistry/Biochemistry disciplines, or a closely related field. Selected candidate(s) must provide education credentials during the offer discussions.
Six years of experience beyond the PhD is required for appointment at the Associate Rank. No additional experience beyond the PhD is required for appointment at the Assistant Rank.
