Thoracic Intermediate Care Unit
The University of Maryland Medical Center has one of the largest general thoracic surgery programs in the country, and is nationally recognized for developing innovative treatments for disorders of the structures and organs of the chest, particularly the lungs and esophagus. Our program offers surgical management of benign and malignant diseases. We also offer multidisciplinary evaluations for most of the diseases we treat. Our physicians are experts in minimally invasive surgery for the lung, esophagus, thymus and other areas of the chest.
The University of Maryland Thoracic Intermediate Care Unit (TIMC) is the region's first and only fully integrated unit dedicated solely to the care of general thoracic surgical patients. The (TIMC) is a 10 bed post-surgical unit designated for the care of patients admitted to the Thoracic Surgery service. The TIMC serves as the postoperative destination for all thoracic surgery patients. The TIMC is for patients who have undergone surgery for lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma, airway disorders, thymic malignancies, mediastinal tumors, chest wall resections, benign disorders of the chest and other thoracic procedures. Patients admitted may come from the, PACU, ICU, CCRU locations or as direct admissions through inter-hospital transfers via Express Care. The TIMC units serve as the backbone of high-end thoracic surgery services and are known to increase safety and decrease length of stay.

Surgical Intermediate Care Unit
The Department of Surgery is the highest volume surgical program in the state of Maryland. The department specializes in the management of the most complex patient problems and is supported by state-of-the-art operating facilities. The department's centers of excellence and special programs offer a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of patient conditions. Clinical and basic science research is the foundation of the department's success. Research funding from the National Institutes of Health is an objective measure that we use to reflect the excellence and quality of our research program as we develop the latest treatment options for patients. The department is consistently ranked as one of the top NIH-funded research programs.
The Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (SIMC) is an 8 bed post-surgical care unit designated for the care and management of complex patients from various surgical services. Scope of service includes continuous EKG, pulse oximetry, and hemodynamic monitoring (i.e. ventilation management, arterial and central venous pressure lines). Patients are admitted following surgical procedures via intra-hospital transfer from acute care, PACU or ICU and as direct admissions through Express Care/Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU). The SIMC serves as the primary postoperative destination for the following specialty surgical services, including but not limited to: Surgical Oncology, General Surgery, Vascular, Genitourinary, Orthopedic, Otolaryngology, and Oral Maxillary Facial surgeries.
We provide and coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.
