DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: St. Charles Bend operates an 18-bed multi-disciplinary care unit as part of level II trauma hospital with 24/7 trauma coverage and full-time neurosurgical and cardiac surgical coverage. The prospective candidate should be comfortable providing care for these patients. We are expanding our ICU to 24 beds as part of a new clinical tower tentatively scheduled for completion in April 2019. The Bend ICU is staffed 24/7 with a board-certified critical care physician from St Charles Medical Group and Bend Memorial Clinic. Every patient in the ICU has a physician in charge of his or her care, and highly specialized physicians consult on a patient's condition. POSITION OVERVIEW: Serves as a board-certified physician in critical care medicine responsible for the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients in intensive care unit. Manages and consults in the intensive care unit on a wide array of medical and surgical critically ill patient problems, including (but not limited to) all types of shock, serious and life-threatening respiratory and vital organ disorders and failure(s), metabolic and drug related toxic syndromes, and infections. This management and consultative activity includes diagnosis and treatment of these problems in a timely, safe, evidence-based, and effective manner.

Critical Care physician works under general supervision of the ICU Medical Director and the Clinical Division Director. There is no direct supervision. Physician exercises independent judgement in selection and performance of critical care evaluations for patients. Physician works in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of critical care medicine. The quality of the professional work is evaluated using quality management, performance improvement, and patient safety principles, policies, and regulations as mandated by the Joint Commission and St Charles Health System.

• Work schedule: Intensivist will cover approximately 156 shifts per year day or night. The number of day vs night shifts the physician will cover the ICU is at the discretion of the ICU Director. Equitable effort will be made with all physicians to share day and night shifts.
• Call expectation: Night call is a condition of employment for this position. Intensivist will take first call for pulmonary consultations. Backup Pulmonary physician will be scheduled at the same time if further consultation is needed.
• Work location: The Physician will working out of the Bend Hospital. Other outreach locations may be added as patient and business needs dictate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned)

Clinical Expectations:

• Performs and documents a complete history and physical examination, including review of the available medical record, to formulate diagnoses and treatment plan.
• Analyses data collected to determine health status and identify differential diagnoses based on history, physical exam, and clinical findings.
• Creates a plan of care, in accordance with evidence-based practice.
• Confers with other healthcare providers including consultations and referrals to prepare a comprehensive patient care plan.
• Manages therapeutic regimen as outlined by established protocols for patients with acute illnesses. Reassesses and modifies plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals.
• Documents reassessment and response to treatment to determine effectiveness of plan of care.
• Performs routine bedside or clinical procedures.
• Performs noninvasive and invasive diagnostic and supportive procedures such as airway management and intubation, mechanical ventilation, central venous access, hemodynamic and vital organ monitoring, and supportive organ failure procedures.
• Provides counseling and teaching, related to the management and prevention of disease, for patients and family members.
• Serves as liaison with discharge planners or with other agencies providing post-hospital care; accurately completes patient discharge instructions and/or discharge summaries.
• Provides emergency care, as required, according to basic life support and advances cardiac life support protocols.
• Delivers first-rate customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, and is timely, efficient, accurate, and courteous.

Administrative Expectations:

• Document all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
• Be familiar with the SCHS organization structure.
• Participate in SCMG physicians meetings and assist in policy formation for SCMG and Physician's practice.
• Keep medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
• Keep all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted.
• Maintain active privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.

EDUCATION

Required:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university.
• Graduation from an accredited medical school.

Preferred:

• Successful completion of an accredited residency program in Critical Care

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required:

• Oregon license as MD / DO.
• Board certified or eligible in critical care. To be board certified or qualified to sit for the boards in primary area of practice at the Hospital. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
• Maintain unrestricted DEA number.
• Maintain unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification.

Preferred:

• Federal DEA number registered in Oregon.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Experience in hospital environments providing care in critical care medicine.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System
• Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results

Preferred:

• 2+ years of Critical Care experience.
• Epic EMR software experience.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

• Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
