JOB SUMMARY
The respiratory therapist will be involved in pulmonary function testing, troubleshooting of pulmonary function equipment, management of clinic patients, and patient education. The respiratory therapist will be involved in both developing and delivering asthma and allergy patient education. He/she will also learn new skills such as vital signs and skin testing in order to assist when there are reduced pediatric pulmonary clinics.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform pulmonary function testing in children. This includes, but may not be limited to, spirometry testing, plethysmography, diffusion studies, IOS, and 6 minute walk tests.
Become familiar with the CareFusion and Vyaire pulmonary function equipment and help with trouble shooting
Provide pulmonary function training, or refresher training, for non-RT staff (nurses, CMAs) in reliable and reproducible pulmonary function testing methods of children for all Duke Department of Pediatrics PDC locations.
Become certified as an asthma educator
Assist with clinic visit: includes rooming of patients post-check in, obtaining vital signs, review of medications in electronic medical records, routine allergy skin testing
Provide asthma and allergy education to patients and families at the end of the visit and potentially asthma classes for patients and families.
Review after visit summaries with patients/families before the patient is checked out
Assist with developing and/or updating asthma and allergy patient education material
Assist with filling out of school forms, medication forms, and food allergy avoidance forms
Assist in the development and implementation of general policies and procedures to provide for the emotional and physical comfort and safety of patients; participate in the formulation of new policies.
Participate in maintaining the environment of care including equipment and other material resources.
Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assists in performance improvement activities.
Assist with control of material resources and maintenance; assist in appraisal of effectiveness of material and equipment and report any equipment malfunctions to charge nurse.
Participate in in-service education programs and other conferences within the service.
Assist in the training of new employees.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Completion of a 2 year AMA approved respiratory care program (Associates Degree or the equivalent) or currently enrolled in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program, and registry eligible.
North Carolina State Licensure or North Carolina State Provisional License
Certification by the National Association for Respiratory Care (NBRC) if graduate. Certification in Basic Life Support ( BLS), and any other applicable certifications applicable to the institution.
