Distinguishing Features of the Class: Under the general supervision of the Chief Respiratory Therapist, incumbents of this class are responsible for the operation and supervision of Respiratory Therapy in assigned areas of Westchester Medical Center. In addition, the incumbent of this position assists in providing instruction in respiratory techniques to hospital staff and students. Supervision is exercised over a number of respiratory therapists, technicians and students. Does related work as required.Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only)Supervises, instructs and participates in the use of all respiratory equipment; Reviews therapy and treatment being given to patients to ensure that the physician's instructions are being carried out; Ensures the maintenance of a complete recordkeeping system recording the utilization and upkeep of equipment and other data, as required; Consults with physicians, nurses and other hospital staff on respiratory cases requiring therapy; Maintains an adequate supply of oxygen and other gases; Participates in the instruction of students, nurses, and other hospital staff in therapeutic techniques; Enforces safety rules and procedures; Participates in the training of new therapists on procedures at Westchester Medical Center; Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through publications, conferences, training seminars, etc. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: Good knowledge of the practices, principles and techniques of respiratory therapy; skill in the operation and maintenance of respiratory therapy equipment; ability to follow medical instructions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to instruct the techniques used in operating respiratory equipment; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential tasks of the position; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software; sound professional judgment; reliability; initiative; resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position. Experience:

Possession of a valid license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Respiratory Therapist. Special Requirements: Possession of registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
